The nerves are normal

Almost everyone is tense the first time — and it has nothing to do with the treatment itself. It's the unfamiliarity: not knowing the protocol, not knowing what you're supposed to say, not knowing how to behave.

Therapists see it every week. It's not a problem to be managed, it's just the ordinary first five minutes of a first appointment. Mentioning it out loud usually removes most of it.

What you're actually worried about

In practice, it's three things. Whether you'll be judged. Whether you'll be pushed into something you didn't agree to. And whether it'll be obvious that you don't know what you're doing.

The first two are handled by a clear conversation at the start — which is exactly what the consultation is for. The third is not a real risk: no one is scoring you.

What to say at the start

Plainly, whatever it is. 'This is my first time.' 'I'm not sure what I want.' 'I'd rather not have my feet touched.' 'Medium pressure, not firm.'

Short sentences, said once, at the beginning. That's the whole protocol. You don't need the right words and there's no script.

Setting your own pace

You're allowed to ask for a pause. You're allowed to ask for less pressure. You're allowed to say you've changed your mind about something — at any point, not just at the start.

A professional will take that in stride. If someone reacts badly to a reasonable request, that's information about them, not about you, and it's better to learn it early.

What usually happens afterwards

The most common reaction is not euphoria, it's surprise at how quickly the hour went. The second most common is sleeping extremely well that night.

Some people feel emotionally flat for an hour or two afterwards. That's a normal response to a long period of physical relaxation and it passes.

Should you go back

If you booked a shorter session the first time, good — that's the sensible approach. If you liked it, book the same therapist again rather than trying someone new immediately. The second session is almost always better than the first, because neither of you is starting from zero.

If it wasn't for you, that's a fine outcome too. It costs one session to find out.
